With innovative multi-genre original productions, sensational interpretations of modern classics, and an "exhilarating blend of precision and anarchy, rigor and bedlam," (The New Yorker), Sō Percussion has redefined the scope and vital role of the modern percussion ensemble. The group—comprised of Eric Cha-Beach, Josh Quillen, Adam Sliwinski, and Jason Treuting—visits Berkeley with two West Coast and three Bay Area premieres, including a brilliant new work by Vijay Iyer, music director of the Ojai at Berkeley 2016 music festival. "Through a mix of consummate skill and quirky charm, this mercurial quartet has helped to ignite an explosive new enthusiasm for percussion music old and new" (The New York Times).
In 2009 Steve Reich's Mallet Quartet kicked off a subgenre of pieces for two marimbas and two vibraphones. In that same vein, new works by Iyer, Donnacha Dennehy, and Jason Treuting demonstrate the possibilities of this satisfying combination of wood and metal. Other works combine keyboard instruments with non-pitched instruments such as flowers pots (Caroline Shaw) and the inside of a piano (Suzanne Farrin).
